Have Your Say On NDIS

You may be aware that the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is currently undertaking a consultation process with NDIS participants and providers about a number of changes which are proposed to improve the scheme and make it more flexible and easier for users to navigate and secure services.

Three papers have been recently released by NDIS for community input with the consultation process to run until the middle of February 2020. These papers go to:

  • access and eligibility for independent assessments,
  • planning policy for personalized budgets and plan flexibility and;
  • supporting young children and their families early, to reach their full potential.

To obtain these papers and to find out more about this process please go to www.ndis.gov.au.

SOSDF sees this consultation process as a great opportunity to address a number of concerns that the Duchenne and Becker community has held in relation to the implementation of NDIS. These concerns were highlighted in our recent McKell report, “Living with Duchenne and Becker in Australia”, and our recent NDIS community forum hosted by the Shadow Minister for the NDIS, Bill Shorten and the Hon. Deborah O’Neill. They are concerns which continue to be raised in our ongoing interactions with families and service providers – and they are a primary reason we are establishing the new position of NDIS Support Coordinator to specifically target and assist the Duchenne and Becker community with NDIS issues.

As the national peak body for Duchenne and Becker in Australia, it is incumbent on SOSDF to represent the needs of our community to policy makers and to make sure your voices are heard in community consultation processes. We have subsequently determined to organize our own community consultation process in January 2021 and to provide some collective responses/feedback on your behalf to the NDIS.

While we are encouraging you to go to the NDIS site directly and to submit your own feedback, we would welcome your participation and feedback in our coordinated response/s. If you would like to participate in this SOSDF project, please let us know via info@saveoursons.org.au using the subject line “NDIS Consultation” and we will be in touch with you shortly.

We look forward to hearing back from you.
